1 It is a very major artery that runs down the entire
front part of the heart and provides the great
3 majority of blood flow to the left ventricle, which
41 is responsible for pumping blood to the body.
51 Q. How important is the left anterior descending
61 artery of the heart in terms of a patient's risk for
7@ premature or sudden death?
8 A. The left anterior descending artery, a
9 blockage in this location would obviously impair
10 blood flow to a large number of blood vessels
ii downstream from r-he blockage.
12 The only thing worse would be a blockage of
13 the main artery, which would interfere with blood
14 flow to the circumflex artery and the left anterior
15 descending artery.
16 So it is number two in terms of severity of
17 problems.
18 Q. Could you perhaps use some of our diagrams to
i9 describe in a little bit more detail what is done
20 with a balloon angioplasty procedure; when is it
11 indicated, and how is it actually performed?
22 MR. KENNEDY: I am going to object, it
23 is something we haven't been into prior to
24 today, the balloon angioplasty, but certainly
25 proceed.

1 A. This is a diagram taken from one of our
2 teaching booklets that deals with coronary
3 angioplasty, Defendant's Exhibit E.
4 This shows the blood flow through an artery
5 that has become narrowed (indicating). There is
6 cholestercl plaque, which dents the artery from
7 below, and dents the artery from above, so blood
8 flow must narrow to get through the blockage.
9 This is a description of the balloon catheter
10 that has been put into the area of narrowing.
11 And then the balloon is expanded in these
12 diagrams (indicating).
13 And then finally at the end, the artery is
14 open, or has been dilated with the balloon.
15 Q. I believe we have some other blowups that
16 might also help illustrate the balloon angioplasty
17 technique.
18 MR. KENNEDY: Objection.
19 A. This is a larger scale diagram. Here you see
20 the wall of the arter-y, here you see what is
21 described as -- what is pictured as a yellow fatty
22 material, which would be a cholesterol plaque, that
23 narrows the artery both from below, and also from
24 above. And this is r-he balloon chat has been passed
25 through the blockage, and then inflation of that
