          9       Public to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing

         10       but the truth, testified as follows:

         12   BY MR. TURCK

         13   Q.    Good afternoon, Dr. Mesko.  Please introduce yourself to

         14         the members of the jury.

         15   A.    I\'m Dr. Mesko.  I\'m an orthopedic surgeon that practices

         16         in Lansing, Michigan.

         17   Q.    How was it that you know Jim Piggott?

         18   A.    I had the occasion to see Mr. Piggot as a consultation

         19         on February 26, 2003, after Dr. Drayer had referred him

         20         to me for management of a complex problem about his left

         21         lower extremity.

         22   Q.    By this point the jury will already have heard from

         23         Dr. Drayer about what he did in relation to -- to Jim\'s

         24         care.  I want to start a little bit earlier and -- and

         25         let you explain to the members of jury who you are and

          1         what you do.  You\'re a doctor?

          2   A.    I am an orthopedic surgeon, yes.

          3   Q.    What does it mean to be an orthopedic surgeon?

          4   A.    Well, it\'s a physician that\'s had subspecialty training

          5         in medical and surgical management of the

          6         musculoskeletal system.

          7   Q.    I see you are a Detroit native?

          8   A.    I grew up in the Detroit area, yes, I did.

          9   Q.    Now, your resume, which I have marked as Exhibit 6,

         10         indicates that you went to med -- medical school where?

         11   A.    I went to medical school at Loyola Stritch in Chicago.

         12   Q.    What did you do after graduating from medical school?

         13   A.    I did a five-year orthopedic residency at Indiana

         14         University.

         15   Q.    What\'s involved in a residency?

         16   A.    It\'s a matter of training initially in
