6 THE VIDEOGRAPHER: On the record
7 ALVIN SCHONFELD, DO, of lawful
8 age, called for examination, as provided by the
9 Ohio Rules of Civil Procedure, being by me
10 first duly sworn, as hereinafter certified,
11 deposed and said as follows:
12 DIRECT EXAMINATION OF ALVIN SCHONFELD, DO
13 BY MR MARCIS:
14 Q Good afternoon, doctor
15 A Hi
16 Q Could you please introduce yourself
17 to the jury?
18 A Sure My name is Alvin Schonfeld,
19 I'm a physician, I specialize in diseases of
20 the lung
21 Q And how long have you been a
22 doctor?
23 A I graduated medical school in 1972,
24 so it would be something just over 30 years
25 Q And could you briefly tell the jury
4
1 about your educational background?
2 A Sure I graduated from Shaker
3 Heights High School in 1964, and I then went to
4 the University of Pittsburgh, graduated with a
5 Bachelor of Science Degree in 1968, and then
6 went to the Chicago College of Osteopathic
7 Medicine where I received the degree of Doctor
8 of Osteopathic Medicine in 1972
9 I then went into the Army Medical
10 Corps for seven years I did an internship in
11 internal medicine at Letterman Army Medical
12 Center in San Francisco, I did a residency in
13 internal medicine at Tripler Army Medical
14 Center in Honolulu, and a fellowship in
15 pulmonary lung disease at Brooke Army Medical
16 Center in San Antonio
17 Q And, doctor, are you licensed to
18 practice medicine in the State of Ohio?
19 A Yes, I am
20 Q And are you board certified in any
21 areas, doctor?
22 A Yes The jury should know we're
23 looking at ice blowing by our window here,
24 that's the noise you hear I'm board certified
25 both in internal medicine and pulmonary
5
1 medicine
2 Q Doctor, can you explain what it
3 means to be board certified?
4 A Sure When a doctor takes a
5 training program, there's a prescribed
6 curriculum If you satisfactorily complete
7 that curriculum, then your program director
8 indicates that you're eligible to sit for an
9 examination If you pass that examination,
10 then you're called board certified
11 The examination which is given is
12 the same exam all over the country, the same
13 day of the week, the same hour, so that
14 everybody who has finished a similar training
15 program is judged against each other I was
16 able to become board certified in both internal
17 medicine and in pulmonary medicine
18 Q Doctor, what is internal medicine?
